About Dr. Jon Spiers

Surgeon. Attorney.
Veteran. Entrepreneur.

Dr. Jon Spiers is running to be our Texas Land Commissioner. He’d be honored to have your vote.

Dr. Jon Spiers is not a politician. He is a leader. He is a heart surgeon, an attorney, a father, an Army Reserve  surgeon, an entrepreneur and he’s married to a fiery Texas Republican woman, Dr. Dana Myers.

Dr. Spiers is a product of the American dream.

His Roots

Dr. Spiers was born in rural Georgia to hard-working, God-fearing parents. His parents made sacrifices to give him a better life.
Dr. Spiers went to Duke University on academic and football scholarships and got a broad education. Playing football helped him pay for an education he and his family would never have been able to afford.

Why He’s Running

Dr. Spiers will be an innovative leader who will maximize the benefit of the General Land Office for Texans, their children, and for all future Texans.

Dr. Spiers will lead a clear, strong mandate to preserve the Alamo and honor our Texas history – making sure Texans understand why the Lone Star State is a beacon of liberty.

Dr. Spiers is a veteran who will serve veterans with dignity and help them get the benefits and care they earned. With the proven ability to excel in times of disaster, Dr. Spiers’ calm, steady focus under pressure will improve how the state and federal governments assist Texans recovering from disasters.

Dr. Spiers will fight to maximize state revenue through strong management of our public lands and natural resources for Texans today, and tomorrow, so all may benefit from a safer, stronger Texas.

Heart Surgeon

After graduating from Duke University, Dr. Spiers went to medical school at the University of Tennessee. He became a general surgeon, a trauma surgeon, and then a heart surgeon, training in Houston at the greatest medical center in the world with Dr. Michael DeBakey. After Houston, Dr. Spiers worked to bring the high-caliber care he learned in Texas to the rest of the country. Dr. Spiers built hospital departments and headed major programs and initiatives. You can probably already tell that Dr. Spiers loves serving folks.

Veteran

Dr. Spiers joined the Army Reserve Medical Corps. It just seemed common sense to Dr. Spiers that the men and women in our military, who were willing to risk their lives for our country, should have someone to care for them who worked every day saving lives. Dr. Spiers spent time as a young Captain temporarily assigned to San Antonio during the first Gulf War. He spent many, many years caring for our Veterans in our VA hospitals. Even today, he and his wife, Dr. Dana Myers, regularly volunteer to help Veterans, in Houston and beyond.

Attorney

Dr. Spiers loved being a heart surgeon and helping people. However, an injury left him with a numb hand. He almost lost his arm.

Faced with this crippling injury, Dr. Spiers did not choose a pity party. He chose to turn adversity into opportunity. As Texans do, he picked himself up and asked, “What’s next? What can I do now? How can I make a difference?”

As an attorney, Dr. Spiers learned about oil and gas law and environmental law. He even wrote about national security and protecting our borders from drug cartels and human traffickers. Before long, Dr. Spiers was named a Rising Star in Texas law. He has worked for clients who couldn’t rub two nickels together. And he has worked for clients with hundreds of millions of dollars and their freedom at stake. As an attorney, Dr. Spiers has navigated complex government rules and regulations for clients – and he has reined them in when they needed a nudge to do the right thing.

Dr. Spiers is NOT a yes-man.

Entrepreneur

Dr. Spiers combines his legal and medical expertise into building companies in Texas and around the world. He is working with a team to build a biomedical plant in Texas, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, creating jobs for Texans, and securing our future.

Dr. Spiers believes Texans should not have to rely on China or other foreign countries for essential products and services.
